Takarua

Lodge

Located in a privileged area, Takarua Lodge offers an unforgettable experience. Only 100 m away from the ocean and the Tahai ceremonial complex, Takarua Lodge is the place where history and nature encounters.

Tahai is one of the most ancient settlements in the island, which remains date back to ancient times, about 1.300 years ago. The first settlers chose it because, in addition to a comfortable path to the sea, it provided them with fresh water from underground sources. In this environment Takarua Lodge provides a relaxed and unique experience. For this we have comfortable and luminous rooms with first class equipment and a spectacular view.

You can enjoy the sunset from our terraces, or have your breakfast contemplating the moais. An experience that connects us with the ancestral and guides us to become one with nature.

Tahai Ceremonial Complex

This archeological site is Rapa Nui's oldest ceremonial center. It was inhabited by up to 300 people whose hare (houses), umu pae (ovens) and hare moa (chicken coops) can be seen even as of today.

Next to Ahu Tahai and Ahu Vai Uri's remains, you can find the Ahu Ko Te Riku ceremonial platform, which contains the only moai that has been completely restored. With its penetrating gaze and its pukao (hat) it reminds us of how the 900 moais that exist on the island should have looked like.

Due to its privileged location, Takarua Lodge offers you a front-row seat to one of the most awesome spectacles on the island. Its sunsets and sunrises is something that every visitor should experience.

Father Englert Museum

This is the suggested starting point for all who visit Takarua Lodge. There you can get familiar  with the Rapa Nui culture as it was before the first contact with the Europeans took place.

The museum exhibits more than 20.000 pieces and various samples of paintings by local artists, photographs and slideshows. Thanks to that you will know in advance the answers to many questions that will arise during your visit to the other large open-air museum that is the island itself.

The museum was called after Father Sebastián Englert, a priest who devoted his life to the study and preservation of the island's heritage, both, material and intangible.

Poko Poko Pool

Under the moai de la Paz watchful sight, there’s a curious circular rock formation, a natural pool that natives call Poko Poko. This is an ideal place to enjoy with the family, since its calm and warm shallow waters are ideal for children. The pool is located at the very heart of Hanga Vare Vare garden.

Nearby you can find the local cemetery, Hanga Roa's downtown and the Ahu O'Rongo, still magnificent even though none of its moais have survived the passage of modernity. Some were cut and their fragments used to build Hanga Roa's old quay.

It is precisely here that the Tapati festival is held in february each year.

Toki School

When Mahani Teave turned 9 years old, she travelled to the mainland to become a pianist. Years later, a concern was born that would change both, her and the island life forever. In 2011, several private individuals donated different instruments to teach music on the island. That was when Mahani, along with her partner Enrique Ika founded the NGO Toki.

After six years of working with volunteers from around the world, Toki is the first self-sustaining music & arts school throughout Latin America and Oceania. At present, Toki School teaches music for free to more than 120 children and young people and has a strong focus on protecting the Rapanui's language, culture, medicine and agriculture.

Get involved on Rapa Nui's cultural richness by taking part in a workshop. You won’t regret it!

Hanga Roa Town

Hanga Roa (Long Bay) with its 7.000 inhabitants, is the island's sole town. It's the place where you can find all public services, diving schools, coffee shops, ice-cream parlors and shop at the local craft stalls.

Its main attractions are the botanical garden with more than 1.200 varieties of flowers, the church with its typical ornaments, and the cemetery with unique mixed Rapanui - Christian tombstones. The nearby Mataveri airport deserves a special mention for its particular history: being the most remote airport in the world, its construction dates back a few years ago and its long runway is used for emergency space shuttle situations.

Whether you visit us by air or by sea, Hanga Roa is the gateway to Rapa Nui.
